Rebecca’s Story

Calling Karinya House for the first time is a mark of tremendous change in my life. The circumstances that caused me to call Karinya were far from ideal. I was 5 months pregnant and every aspect of my life had led to a crisis situation. I had lost my job, the father of my child had left me in financial difficulties, emotionally and physically exhausted.

As I was pregnant with few resources I found myself vulnerable within society and limited in ability to make the changes necessary to look after myself and my child.

Karinya has played a major part in rebuilding my life with Jasper.

I have always been given respect and never judged for needing their help. This aspect of giving support is very important as it allowed my dignity to be preserved and strengths to be built, in formidable circumstances.

I have obtained my drivers licence, I have finished my first year in Graduate Diploma in Education (1 year to go) and I am part of the Parents As Teachers program, and as a direct consequence of now knowing the true value of assistance, I have, in turn, volunteered to help an elderly lady over the past year and a half.

I hope the staff and contributors to Karinya House feel proud to know the significance of their services and the warmth in which they are delivered.

I am very pleased to have this opportunity to formally say thank you to all those involved in Karinya House and with pride I can say that Karinya House is part of Jasper’s and my history together – a part of the sense of well-being we enjoy in the present and will always be a part of our future endeavours and successes.
